Mentawai Surf Holiday: world-class waves, thoughtfully planned

The best-known reef breaks include Macaronis, Lance's Right and Left (HTs), Rifles, Telescopes and Greenbush. Most suit intermediate to advanced surfers, with gentler options such as Pitstops for building confidence.

Peak season runs from April to October, when the dry season brings consistent, sizeable Indian Ocean swell. November to March is quieter, with smaller crowds and smaller waves that can suit less experienced surfers.

Fly into Padang in West Sumatra, then take a fast boat to the islands. The crossing usually takes around three to four hours depending on the boat and sea conditions; slower ferries take longer.

Some are, but many breaks are shallow reef waves for intermediate to advanced surfers. Beginners should travel in the quieter season, surf with a guide and stick to gentler spots.

Wear reef booties, surf with a buddy, check tides and forecasts, and carry travel insurance that covers surfing. A local guide who knows each break is the single best precaution.
