Mentawai surfing means warm-water reef breaks off West Sumatra, about 150 km from Padang, with more than 70 named waves. The main season runs April to October and peaks June to August. When to go: swell, wind and crowds, month by month

The main swell season runs April to October and peaks June to August, when south-east trade winds groom the reefs and the boats are busiest. November to March is smaller, wetter and far quieter. Pick a month to see what it usually brings.

When is the best time for a Mentawai surf holiday?

April to October is the main season, with the most consistent swell from June to August. May, September and early October balance good waves with fewer boats; November to March is smaller, wetter and quiet.

How do you get to the Mentawai Islands?

Fly to Padang (PDG), then take the public fast ferry, about 3.5 to 5 hours to Tuapejat on Sipora and not daily, or a resort speedboat transfer.

Is Mentawai surfing suitable for beginners?

Some of it. The famous breaks are shallow reefs for intermediate and advanced surfers, but a few bases sit near softer waves and offer coaching. Choose the base for your level.

How much does a Mentawai surf holiday cost?

Published 2025–2026 resort rates run from about US$130 to US$650+ per person per night, plus flights, transfers and the regional surf levy. See the price guide.

Do surfers pay a levy in the Mentawai Islands?

Yes. The regency charges IDR 2,000,000 per surfer per 15 days (since February 2024). Collection methods are changing, so confirm how your operator handles it.
