What makes the Mentawais different
Indian Ocean swell arrives here almost unobstructed and lands on shallow coral reefs, which shape it into long, hollow waves. That is the whole story: consistency, and reef.

When to go
Peak season runs April to October, when the Indian Ocean sends consistent swell and the islands are in their dry season. July and August are the busiest, with the most people on the best waves.
November to March is quieter and smaller: fewer boats, more room in the water, and conditions that suit surfers still building confidence.
