Mentawai Surf Tours: Formats, Inclusions and How to Choose

On this page
Mentawai surf tours are organised surf trips to the islands off West Sumatra, sold either as land-based resort or camp stays or as boat charters that move between breaks. Most run 7 to 14 nights from Padang and bundle transfers, meals and daily boat access. The best format depends on your level, group size, budget and dates.
The phrase “Mentawai surf tours” covers several quite different products, and operators don’t always use the terms the same way. A “tour” might be a fixed-date coaching trip for eight people, a ten-night resort package or a whole boat chartered by your group. This page sorts the main formats, what each one includes, how boat-based trips differ from land-based ones, and how to match a tour to the way you want to surf.
Mentawai Surf Holiday is an independent planning guide, not a tour operator. We don’t own boats or resorts. Every boat and resort mentioned on this site is run by an independent operator; we help travellers understand the options and connect with operators who fit their plans.
The main types of Mentawai surf tours
Almost every Mentawai surf tour falls into one of four formats.
| Format | How it works | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resort or camp package | Fixed land base; daily boats to breaks in range | Couples, mixed groups, non-surfing partners, intermediates | Limited to waves within boat range of the base |
| Shared boat charter (per berth) | Liveaboard moves with the swell; you book a cabin or berth | Solo surfers and pairs who want variety | Shared cabins, fixed group, little space on long trips |
| Private boat charter | Your group books the whole boat and sets the pace | Groups of friends, experienced surfers | Highest total cost; needs a full group |
| Hosted coaching or retreat tour | Fixed dates with a coach, video review and set itinerary | Surfers working on technique, women’s groups | Less flexibility, fixed departure dates |
Resort tours dominate the market for travellers who want comfort and stability. Boat tours suit surfers who want to chase the swell. If a land base sounds right, our Mentawai surf resort guide explains how to compare regions and quotes.
What Mentawai surf tours usually include
Inclusions vary, but a properly packaged tour normally covers:
- Pick-up in Padang and the crossing to the islands, by public fast ferry, resort speedboat or the charter boat itself
- Accommodation on land or aboard
- Full board: three meals, water, tea and coffee
- Daily boat access to surf breaks, with a driver or crew
- Local surf guiding and basic first aid
Usually not included: flights to Padang, a hotel night in Padang, alcohol, travel insurance, board hire and the Mentawai surf levy. The levy is IDR 2,000,000 per surfer for each 15-day period. Some operators collect it and some don’t, so ask.
How long should a Mentawai surf tour be?
Seven nights is the practical minimum once you count a day each way for travel. Ten nights gives you a better chance of catching at least one good swell. Fourteen nights is common among surfers who travel a long way to get here, and many operators offer long-stay discounts. Resort check-in days usually follow the ferry timetable, and charters run on fixed departure dates, so your dates need to fit the operator’s schedule rather than the other way round.
What a 10-night resort tour looks like
You land in Padang the day before and stay near the airport or harbour. The next morning you take the fast ferry or a speedboat across, and with luck you’re surfing that afternoon. The middle eight days follow the swell: dawn sessions before the wind, a rest at midday, and a second session in the afternoon at whichever break the guide picks. Flat or windy days bring snorkelling, fishing or a village visit. On the last morning you cross back to Padang and stay overnight before flying home, which protects you if a boat runs late.
Boat-based tours: how charters fit in
A charter is a tour where the boat is your hotel. Most leave from Padang, cross overnight, and then move between regions as the swell and wind change, so you wake up somewhere new more often than on a land-based trip. Mentawai charter boats range from simple traditional surf boats to larger, more comfortable liveaboards, and all of them are run by independent operators with their own crews, cabin layouts and safety standards.
| Question | Shared-cabin charter | Private charter |
|---|---|---|
| Who is on board? | Other surfers who booked the same departure | Only your group |
| How is it priced? | Per person, per berth | Per boat, split across the group |
| Who sets the itinerary? | Captain and guide, balancing the whole group | Your group, with the captain’s advice |
| Typical length | Often 10–12 nights on fixed dates | Flexible within the operator’s schedule |
| Best for | Solo surfers, pairs, small groups | Groups of friends who can fill the cabins |
As a planning figure, published 2025–2026 shared-cabin charters were about US$1,900–4,400 per person for 10–12 nights, before the surf levy, and prices vary widely by operator, boat and season. A private charter only makes sense on cost if your group fills most of the berths. Long trips to the southern breaks can also carry a fuel surcharge, so confirm the route and what it adds before you pay a deposit.
Resort or charter?
A resort usually wins for couples, mixed-ability groups, non-surfers and anyone who sleeps badly at sea. A charter usually wins for a committed group of intermediate-to-advanced surfers who want to cover the most breaks in the time they have. Many surfers do one of each over different years.
When to go
The main swell season runs from about April to October. June to August usually brings the most consistent and largest surf, with south-east trade winds that are offshore at many breaks. These are also the busiest and most expensive months. The shoulder months (April, May, September and October) often bring a good balance of swell and fewer boats. From November to March the surf is generally smaller and less consistent, winds are more variable and rain is more frequent, but fun waves still happen and prices can be lower. Our best month to surf Mentawai guide goes month by month.
How to choose the right tour
- Be honest about your level. Many Mentawai reefs are shallow and powerful. A tour that promises famous waves isn’t automatically right for an intermediate surfer.
- Count your group. A solo surfer or couple usually gets the best value from a resort or shared berth. A group of eight to ten can make a private charter work.
- Think about non-surfers. Partners who don’t surf generally have a better time on land than on a boat.
- Compare like with like. Put quotes side by side with the same inclusions: transfers, levy, fuel, guiding and Padang nights.
- Check safety basics. Ask about first aid, communications, evacuation plans and the crew’s experience in local waters.
Questions worth asking any operator
- How many surfers share each surf boat or tender?
- What happens if a swell arrives that suits a break outside the normal range?
- Is the itinerary fixed, or does the guide choose daily?
- What is the cancellation and weather-delay policy?
- On a boat: how many cabins, how many bathrooms, and is there air conditioning at night?
Budgeting
As a rough guide from 2025–2026 published rates, land-based camps typically start around US$130–250 per person per night, mid-range resorts around US$200–350, and luxury resorts US$400 and up. Shared-cabin charters often land in a similar band to mid-range or upper-mid resorts per night. Treat these as planning figures, because prices vary by operator and season. Frequently asked questions
Are Mentawai surf tours suitable for beginners?
Some land-based tours are, if they include lessons, soft boards and access to gentle waves. Most boat charters are aimed at intermediate to advanced surfers.
Is a resort tour or a boat tour better value?
For one or two people, a resort or shared berth is usually better value. For a full group, a private charter can work out competitive per person.
Can I join a tour on my own?
Yes. Shared charters, camps and coaching tours all take solo travellers, often with shared rooms or cabins.
Do I need my own surfboards?
Most surfers bring their own quiver, typically two or three boards including something a little longer for bigger days. Board hire is limited and should be booked ahead.
How crowded are Mentawai surf tours?
The best-known breaks can be busy in peak season when several boats and resort groups arrive together. Good guides work around this with early starts and alternative breaks.
