Mentawai Surf Resort Guide: Regions, Prices and How to Choose

On this page
A Mentawai surf resort is a land base on one of the islands off West Sumatra that bundles your room, three meals and daily boat trips to nearby reefs into one package. Most sell fixed 7, 10 or 14-night stays, and published 2025–2026 rates typically run from about US$130 to US$650+ per person per night.
Picking a Mentawai surf resort is mostly a question of geography. The islands stretch for roughly 300 km, and a resort can only reach the waves inside its boat range. Choose the right zone for your level and the season, and the rest (room style, food, budget) gets easier. This guide explains how Mentawai surf resorts work, what separates them, what “all inclusive” really covers, and how to compare quotes so the cheapest-looking option doesn’t end up the most expensive.
Mentawai Surf Holiday is an independent planning guide. We don’t own or operate any resort or boat. We help travellers compare options and get in touch with operators who fit their dates, level and budget.
How a Mentawai surf resort works
Nearly every resort in the islands runs on the same model. You fly into Padang (Minangkabau International Airport, PDG), usually stay one night on the mainland, and then cross to the islands by public fast ferry or a resort speedboat. From that point the resort handles almost everything: meals, a room or bungalow, and a surf boat with a driver who takes guests to whichever breaks suit the swell, tide and wind.
Check-in days are usually tied to the ferry timetable. The fast ferry from Padang to Tuapejat on Sipora generally takes about 3.5 to 5 hours depending on the vessel and sea state, and it does not sail every day, so resorts build their 7, 10 and 14-night schedules around those departures. Resorts further south use the port of Sikakap in the Pagai group, followed by a speedboat transfer.
Why the boat matters more than the room
The surf in the Mentawais is spread across many separate reefs. A resort with a fast, well-maintained boat, a sensible guest-to-boat ratio and a clear fuel policy will put you on better waves than one with a nicer pool and a single overloaded boat. When you compare resorts, ask how many guests share each boat, how many boat runs a day are included, and whether longer missions cost extra fuel. “Unlimited boat trips” normally means unlimited local trips within the resort’s usual range, subject to weather, not unlimited fuel to any break you name.
Mentawai surf resorts by region
The main resort zones each have a different character. The table summarises them; the wave names are the best-known breaks in each area, not a promise of what you’ll surf on a given day.
| Region | Well-known nearby waves | Suits | Usual access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playgrounds (Karangmajat, Masokut, Nyang Nyang, south of Siberut) | Rifles, Bank Vaults, Kandui, E-Bay, Burgerworld | Broad mix of levels; many breaks in a small radius | Ferry to Tuapejat or Muara Siberut, then resort boat |
| South Sipora (Katiet) | Lance’s Right (HTs), Lance’s Left | Intermediate to advanced; HTs is shallow and hollow | Ferry to Tuapejat, then road or boat south |
| Northwest Sipora | Telescopes and nearby lefts | Intermediate to advanced | Ferry to Tuapejat, then boat |
| North Pagai (Silabu) | Macaronis, Silabu Left | Confident intermediates and up | Ferry to Sikakap, then about 1–2 hours by speedboat |
Playgrounds is the densest cluster of breaks, so a resort there can usually find something rideable even when the swell is small or the wind is wrong. South Sipora means waking up in front of Lance’s Right, one of the most photographed waves in the archipelago, but it rewards surfers who are comfortable on shallow reef. The Pagai region is quieter and further south, built around the long left at Macaronis. For a deeper look at the waves themselves, see our guide to the best Mentawai surf spots.
Prices and tiers
Rates are almost always quoted per person, per night or per package, with meals and boat access included. Based on published 2025–2026 rates, the market falls into three broad bands. Treat these as planning figures only, because prices vary by operator, season, room occupancy and trip length.
| Tier | Typical published range (2025–2026) | What you usually get |
|---|---|---|
| Surf camp or homestay | Around US$130–250 pp/night | Simple rooms, often fan-cooled, shared boat trips, set meals |
| Mid-range resort | Around US$200–350 pp/night | Private ensuite rooms, scheduled boats with fuel, transfers on set days |
| Luxury resort or villa | Around US$400–650+ pp/night | Villas, higher staff ratios, smaller boat groups, spa or yoga at some |
Peak months from June to September fill first and attract the full rate. Some resorts publish early-booking or long-stay discounts, and shoulder months can be cheaper. Some published rates also add government tax and a service charge on top. Our Mentawai surf resort prices guide breaks down each tier with a full trip budget, and the luxury Mentawai surf resort guide covers the top end.
What “all inclusive” covers, and what it leaves out
Almost every Mentawai resort sells an all-inclusive package, but operators have very different ideas of what “inclusive” means. Two quotes that look US$50 a night apart can end up hundreds of dollars apart once you add transfers, levy, fuel and drinks. The core is consistent: accommodation for a fixed stay, full board, daily surf boats with a driver, guiding on boat trips and basic first aid. Many resorts also bundle the transfer from Padang. The items below are where packages differ.
| Item | Often included? | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| International and domestic flights | Almost never | Which flight times work with the transfer day? |
| Padang hotel nights | Sometimes | Is a night on arrival or departure included? |
| Ferry or speedboat to the resort | Often, sometimes sold separately | Does it include board-bag freight and port fees? |
| Mentawai surf levy | Varies | Who collects it, and how is it paid? |
| Extra fuel for long boat missions | Varies | Is there a fuel cap or distance limit? |
| Alcohol and soft drinks | Rarely | Is there a bar tab, and in what currency? |
| Travel insurance and evacuation cover | Never | Does the resort require proof of cover? |
Why the levy and transfers matter most
The two biggest swing items are the surf levy and the transfer. The levy is IDR 2,000,000 per surfer for each 15-day period, set by Mentawai Islands Regency regulation since February 2024. Some resorts include it, others collect it on arrival, and collection methods have been changing, with some 2026 sources describing online payment, so get the answer in writing. A return transfer from Padang can also add a few hundred US dollars per person when it isn’t bundled.
A worked example: 10 nights mid-range
A 10-night package at around US$200–350 per person per night comes to roughly US$2,000–3,500. If the transfer isn’t bundled, add a few hundred US dollars for the return trip from Padang with boards. The levy adds roughly US$120–130 at recent exchange rates. Add one or two Padang hotel nights, a bar tab and tips, then flights and insurance. The package price is often only two-thirds to three-quarters of the true total, which is why quotes that look similar can end up far apart.
How to choose the right resort
There is no single best Mentawai surf resort. The right one depends on four things, roughly in this order.
- Your surf level. Most famous Mentawai waves break over shallow coral. Intermediate surfers do better near a cluster of breaks with softer options; advanced surfers can base themselves in front of a heavier reef.
- Your dates. The main swell season runs from about April to October. In the smaller, wetter months, a resort with many breaks in range matters more.
- Who is coming. Non-surfing partners need shade, decent rooms and things to do besides watching from the boat. Some resorts publish lower non-surfer rates.
- Budget and comfort. Air conditioning, private bathrooms and reliable power are not universal. Ask rather than assume.
How to compare two quotes
- Write down each package price for the same number of nights.
- Add the transfer, the levy and Padang hotel nights where they are not included.
- Estimate drinks and extras at your usual rate.
- Compare boat terms: guests per boat, runs per day and fuel policy.
- Ask what happens on flat or blown-out days, and who pays if a ferry is cancelled.
Boat terms are the tie-breaker. A slightly dearer package with fewer guests per boat and no fuel cap often delivers far more surfing.
Booking: timing and process
For peak months, many travellers book six to twelve months ahead, especially at popular resorts with limited rooms. A typical flow is: confirm dates against the resort’s check-in days, pay a deposit, then book flights to Padang that land at least a day before the transfer. Build a buffer on the return too, as weather can delay boats. If your flight lands after the ferry has left, you may wait days for the next sailing or pay for a private speedboat.

Frequently asked questions
Is a surf resort or a boat charter better in the Mentawais?
A resort gives you a stable room, better sleep and more for non-surfers to do. A charter moves with the swell and can reach more breaks. Our guide to Mentawai surf tours compares resort, shared-charter and private-charter formats.
Is everything included at an all-inclusive Mentawai surf resort?
No. Room, meals and daily boats are standard, but flights, alcohol, insurance and often the surf levy and Padang nights are extra. Ask for the inclusions list in writing.
How far in advance should I book?
For June to September, six to twelve months ahead is common. Shoulder-season and wet-season dates can often be booked later, but small resorts still fill up.
Is the surf levy included in the resort price?
Sometimes. Some resorts collect it for you, others ask you to pay separately. Budget IDR 2,000,000 per surfer per 15 days and confirm how it’s paid.
Can beginners stay at a Mentawai surf resort?
Yes, at the right one. Choose a resort with a forgiving wave nearby, soft boards and guiding included, and avoid booking in front of a heavy reef.
Is an all-inclusive resort better value than a charter?
For solo travellers, couples and mixed groups, usually yes. A full private charter can be competitive per person for a group of experienced surfers.
