A Siberut surf resort is usually a land-based camp or resort on the small islands off southern Siberut, such as Karangmajat, Masokut and Nyang Nyang, in the area surfers call Playgrounds. These bases reach many reef breaks by short boat ride, suit a wide range of levels, and are reached from Padang by ferry plus a resort boat.

Siberut is the largest and most northerly of the Mentawai Islands, but most surfers who say they are staying “on Siberut” are actually on one of the small islands just off its southern coast. That distinction matters for planning. Siberut itself is mostly rainforest, rivers and villages, much of it inside a national park, while the surf resorts cluster around the reef passes to the south. This guide explains where Siberut surf resorts are, what makes the area special, how to get there, and how to choose one.

Mentawai Surf Holiday is an independent planning guide. We don’t own or operate any resort; we help travellers compare options and connect with independent operators.

Where Siberut surf resorts are

The surf zone south of Siberut is known as Playgrounds. It is a scatter of small islands and coral reefs, including Karangmajat, Masokut and Nyang Nyang, where dozens of breaks sit within a short boat ride of each other. Resorts and camps are spread across these islands, mostly on beachfront land facing the reef passes. A few simpler stays sit on Siberut’s own southern coast, but the main resort cluster is offshore.

Location What it’s like Typical stay
Karangmajat area Close to several well-known Playgrounds reefs; one of the busiest resort zones Mid-range to upscale resorts and camps
Masokut and nearby islands Quiet islands with reef passes on several sides Surf camps and small resorts
Nyang Nyang Small island with a wave of the same name and nearby reefs Small camps and homestay-style stays
South Siberut coast Mainland Siberut; villages, rivers and rainforest Simple guesthouses; fewer dedicated surf resorts

Why surfers choose the Siberut area

The main reason is choice. Because so many breaks sit close together, a resort in Playgrounds can usually find something to surf whatever the swell size or wind direction. That makes it a forgiving base for a first trip, and for surfers who want variety across a ten-night stay. Well-known waves in range of the area include Rifles, Bank Vaults and Kandui Left for advanced surfers, alongside softer options such as E-Bay, Burgerworld and A-Frames on smaller days. Read our Kandui surf guide for one of the area’s most famous lefts.

The trade-off is traffic. Playgrounds sits close to the usual charter routes from Padang, so the best-known reefs can be busy in June to August when boats and resort groups arrive together. Good resort guides work around this with early starts and lesser-known reefs.

Waves near Siberut surf resorts

Wave Type Typical level
Rifles Powerful, shallow right Advanced to expert
Bank Vaults Heavy, hollow right Advanced to expert
Kandui Left Fast, heavy left barrel Advanced
E-Bay Left, more forgiving on moderate days Intermediate
Burgerworld, A-Frames Softer, playful reefs Progressing to confident intermediate
Nyang Nyang Reef break off the island of the same name Intermediate to advanced, depending on swell

Levels shift with swell, tide and wind, so treat these as typical. Our Nyang Nyang surf guide covers one of the local waves in more detail.

Getting to a Siberut surf resort

Every route starts in Padang, at Minangkabau International Airport (PDG). From there you have three main options:

  • Fast ferry to Tuapejat on Sipora, usually about 3.5 to 5 hours, followed by a resort speedboat north to Playgrounds. Many resorts in the area use this route.
  • Ferry to Muara Siberut, the main port on Siberut. Regular services can be overnight and take 10 to 12 hours, and you still need a resort boat to reach the offshore islands.
  • Direct resort speedboat from Padang, where offered, which saves the ferry connection but costs more.

Which port is best depends on the resort, so let it advise you and match your flights to its transfer days. Our guide on how to get to Mentawai surf resorts explains the ferry options and timing.

Prices

Resorts around Playgrounds sell mostly all-inclusive packages of 7, 10 or 14 nights with meals, daily boat trips and guiding. Published 2025–2026 rates for dedicated surf camps in the area commonly run from around US$100–250 per person per night, with mid-range and higher-end resorts above that. Rates vary with room type, occupancy and season, and the surf levy of IDR 2,000,000 per surfer per 15 days is often extra. Ask each resort whether the Padang transfer, levy and Padang hotel nights are included before comparing quotes.

Beyond the surf: Siberut island

Siberut is more than a backdrop. Much of the island is protected as Siberut National Park, established in 1993 and covering roughly 1,900 square kilometres, and the island is part of a UNESCO biosphere reserve. It is home to Mentawai communities with a distinctive culture and to wildlife found nowhere else. Visits to villages or the rainforest need a local guide and advance arrangement, and they are a separate trip from a surf resort stay rather than an easy afternoon add-on. If you want to include one, ask your resort early so it can be planned around flat days.

How to choose a Siberut surf resort

  1. Check which breaks are in range. Ask for the waves the resort reaches on a normal day and on a long mission.
  2. Ask about boats. How many boats, how many guests per boat, and whether fuel is capped.
  3. Match the room to your needs. Air conditioning, private bathrooms and all-night power vary between camps.
  4. Confirm transfers. Which port, which days, and what happens if the ferry is cancelled.
  5. Think about crowds. If quiet line-ups matter, travel in the shoulder months and ask how the resort avoids the busiest reefs.

Frequently asked questions

Are Siberut surf resorts actually on Siberut?

Mostly not. The main surf resorts are on small islands off southern Siberut in the Playgrounds area, with only a few simpler stays on Siberut itself.

Is the Siberut area good for intermediate surfers?

Yes. Playgrounds has several softer reefs alongside its heavier waves, so intermediates usually have options on most days.

How do I get to a Siberut surf resort from Padang?

Usually by fast ferry to Tuapejat and then a resort boat, or by ferry to Muara Siberut plus a resort boat. Some resorts run direct speedboats.

Is Playgrounds crowded?

The best-known reefs can be busy in peak season because many charters pass through. Early sessions and shoulder months help.

Can I visit Siberut’s villages from a surf resort?

Sometimes, with a local guide and advance planning. It is usually arranged as a separate excursion on a flat day.
