Kandui Mentawai surf means Kandui Left: a fast, hollow, shallow left-hand reef barrel off Karangmajat Island in the Playgrounds region of the northern Mentawai. It is an advanced-to-expert wave that comes alive on solid southwest groundswell with light easterly to northeasterly winds, and it sits a short boat ride from Rifles, Bank Vaults and gentler options.

Some surf guides also list the wave as “No Kandui”. When it is on, Kandui Left throws a long, round barrel that runs fast down a shallow reef. When the swell is too small or the angle is off, it can sit nearly flat while nearby waves are working. This Kandui Mentawai surf guide explains where it is, what it needs, who should paddle out, and how to plan a stay around it.

Where is Kandui?

Kandui is on Karangmajat Island, one of the small islands in the area surfers call Playgrounds, between Siberut and Sipora in the northern half of the Mentawai chain. It is often described loosely as “near Siberut”, but it is not a Siberut break. The Playgrounds region packs a dense cluster of waves into a short boat radius, which is why both land camps and charter boats spend time here. The breaks around it are covered below.

Kandui Mentawai surf: what the wave is like

Kandui Left is a left-hand reef break that runs fast and hollow over shallow coral. The take-off is steep, the first section can bowl and pinch, and the barrel that follows rewards surfers who can set a high line and hold it. On the right swell it is one of the best lefts in the region. It is also heavy: the reef is close to the surface, hold-downs are real, and a mistimed duck dive or late take-off can end on coral.

Most guides grade it advanced to expert. Strong intermediates can learn a lot by watching it from the channel and surfing the softer neighbours, but this is not the wave to learn tube riding on.

Conditions that make Kandui work

  • Swell: southwest groundswell with some size and a long period. West-quadrant swells generally light it up; southerly swells can wrap less effectively.
  • Wind: easterly to northeasterly is offshore or close to it. Light winds are best, so dawn sessions often win.
  • Tide: depth matters a lot over this reef. Local guides decide the window on the day; lower tides make it shallower and more dangerous.
  • Size: there is no reliable published minimum. Treat any single number with caution and ask your guide for the threshold in terms of swell direction, period and tide.

Kandui and its neighbours

Part of Kandui’s appeal is what sits around it. Within a short boat ride you can find waves for different winds, tides and skill levels, which is useful when Kandui itself is too small or too big.

Break Direction Character Typical level
Kandui Left Left Fast, hollow, shallow barrel Advanced to expert
Rifles Right Long, mechanical, very fast tube Advanced to expert
Bank Vaults Right Thick, square, heavy barrel Advanced to expert
Hideaways Left Powerful take-off, then longer wall Intermediate to advanced
Beng Bengs Left Shorter, playful, rippable Intermediate
Pitstops Right Punchy right, shorter barrels Intermediate and up

Rifles and Bank Vaults are the two big-name rights nearby. Read our Rifles guide and Bank Vaults guide for detail on each.

When is the best time to surf Kandui?

The main Mentawai swell season runs roughly from April to October, with May to September the most reliable window for the long-period southwest swells Kandui likes. June to August usually brings the biggest and most frequent pulses, and also the most boats. April, May, September and October can offer a good balance of swell and space. From November to March the region is generally smaller and less consistent, though solid swells can still arrive, and winds are more variable.

Period What to expect around Kandui
April to May Swell season building; good mix of size and fewer people
June to August Most consistent and largest swells; busiest lineups
September to October Often still excellent; crowds ease
November to March Smaller and less reliable; Kandui needs a proper swell to break well

How to surf Kandui safely

  1. Watch several sets from the channel first. Note where the reef dries and where surfers kick out.
  2. Take a step-up. A board a few inches longer than your shortboard helps you get in early on a fast, steep take-off.
  3. Commit or do not go. Hesitating at the top of a Kandui wave is how people end up on the reef.
  4. Protect your head when you fall and fall flat. Consider a helmet on bigger days.
  5. Know your exit. Kick out before the shallowest inside section if you are not sure you can make it.
  6. Clean every reef cut properly that same day.

Where to stay for Kandui

You can surf Kandui from a land base or from a charter boat. Land-based resorts and villas operate on and around Karangmajat, and some sit directly in front of the wave, with Rifles a few minutes away by boat. That makes a stay here attractive for surfers who want to be first out at dawn and switch breaks quickly as the wind changes. Accommodation in this part of the Playgrounds tends toward the premium end, so compare what is included: surf boats, guiding, transfers and meals vary a lot between operators. Our luxury Mentawai surf resort guide and the broader Mentawai surf resort guide explain how to compare packages line by line.

Charter boats also visit Kandui as part of Playgrounds itineraries. A boat gives you flexibility to chase swell across the islands, but you will share the lineup with other boats in peak season and you will not always be parked in front of Kandui when it fires.

Getting there

Most Kandui trips start in Padang on mainland Sumatra. Some resorts in this area run their own fast transfers that take around three hours from Padang in good conditions; others connect via the public fast ferry to Tuapejat on Sipora followed by a speedboat. Allow a buffer day in Padang, as weather can delay crossings.

Frequently asked questions

Is “No Kandui” the same wave as Kandui Left?

Yes. Several surf guides use “No Kandui” as an alternative name for Kandui Left. Whatever name you hear on the boat, it refers to the same shallow, hollow left off Karangmajat.

Can intermediate surfers surf Kandui?

Kandui Left is best left to advanced surfers. Intermediates staying nearby usually get better waves at Beng Bengs, Pitstops or Hideaways on moderate days, and can watch Kandui from the channel.

Is Kandui a left or a right?

Kandui is a left. Its famous neighbours Rifles and Bank Vaults are rights, which is why the area works well for surfers who want both directions within a short boat ride.

How do I get to Kandui from Padang?

Either on a resort-run fast transfer from Padang, which several operators quote at about three hours in good weather, or on the public fast ferry to Tuapejat followed by a speedboat. Confirm door-to-door timing with your operator.

What board should I bring for Kandui?

Your normal shortboard plus a step-up a few inches longer for size. See our planning notes on the surfing Mentawai islands homepage for a full trip overview.
