Almost every Mentawai surf resort includes daily boat trips, because most breaks can only be reached by sea. What differs is the detail: how many boats run, how many surfers share each one, how far they go and whether fuel is capped. Long missions and overnight trips are usually extra, and multi-day boat surfing is normally sold as a charter.

If you search for a Mentawai surf resort with boat trips, you’ll find that nearly every resort says boats are included. That’s true, and it’s also where the real differences between resorts hide. A resort with a fast boat, a small group and a generous fuel policy can give you far more surfing than one with a nicer room and a crowded boat. This guide explains how resort boat trips work, the terms that matter, what long missions and overnight trips involve, and the questions to ask before you book.

Mentawai Surf Holiday is an independent planning guide. We don’t own resorts or boats; we help travellers compare options and connect with independent operators.

Why boats are central to a Mentawai resort stay

The Mentawai surf breaks sit on reefs spread around small islands and passes. Only a few can be reached on foot from any one resort, so the surf boat is how you get to the waves every day. Each morning the guide reads the swell, tide and wind, chooses a break, and the boat takes the group there. If the first wave doesn’t work, the boat moves on. In practice, the boat set-up decides how many waves you ride far more than the room does.

How daily boat trips usually work

Element Typical arrangement What varies
Boats One or more small, fast surf boats with a driver Number of boats, engine power, shade and safety kit
Guests per boat A small group, often split by level Group size; some resorts don’t publish a maximum
Runs per day Usually a morning and an afternoon session Whether extra runs are possible
Range Breaks within the resort’s normal operating area How far the boat will go on a normal day
Fuel Included for normal trips Caps, distance limits or surcharges for long trips
Guiding A local guide or driver who knows the reefs Coaching, photos or video at some resorts

“Unlimited boat trips” usually means unlimited local trips within the normal range, subject to weather and safety, not unlimited fuel to any break you name.

Long missions and overnight trips

Long day missions

When a big swell or unusual wind suits a break outside the normal range, some resorts run a longer day trip. These can be the best sessions of a trip, but they often carry a fuel surcharge or need a minimum number of surfers. Ask how they are priced and how often they happen.

Overnight boat trips

An overnight mission, sleeping aboard to reach distant reefs, is not a normal part of a land-based package. A few operators connected with land bases also offer dedicated charter boats, but this is a separate product with its own price. Most multi-day boat surfing in the Mentawais is sold as a liveaboard charter, often around 10–12 nights. If you want a mix, ask whether a resort can combine a land stay with a few charter days. Our Mentawai surf tours guide compares land-based and boat-based formats.

Boat trips by resort area

Where a resort sits shapes what its boats can reach. In the Playgrounds area south of Siberut, many breaks lie within a short ride, so a boat can switch waves quickly. In south Sipora, boats work around Lance’s Right and Lance’s Left and nearby reefs. Around Silabu on North Pagai, trips centre on Macaronis and neighbouring lefts. A resort near a dense cluster gives you more options on a normal day; a resort near one famous wave puts you close to that wave but may need longer trips for variety. Our Mentawai surf resort guide compares the regions.

Non-surfing boat trips

Boats aren’t only for surfing. Many resorts use them on flat days or for non-surfers: snorkelling trips, fishing, visits to other islands and, with a local guide and advance planning, village visits. Some let non-surfing partners ride along on surf trips if there is space. Ask what is included and what costs extra.

Questions to ask before you book

  1. How many boats run each day, and how many surfers share each one?
  2. Are surfers grouped by level?
  3. Which breaks are within the normal daily range?
  4. Is fuel capped, and what does a long mission cost?
  5. Are overnight or multi-day boat trips available, and how are they priced?
  6. What safety equipment, communications and first aid are on each boat?
  7. What happens if weather stops boats from running?
  8. Can non-surfers join boat trips, and at what cost?

Get the answers in writing and compare them side by side. If you are comparing whole packages, our guide to Mentawai surf resort packages explains the other inclusions to check.

Safety on resort boats

The Mentawais are remote and crossings can be rough, especially in the wetter months. A well-run boat carries life jackets, a first-aid kit, a means of communication and an experienced driver, and the resort has a plan for evacuating a serious injury to the mainland. Ask about these before you book, and travel with insurance that covers surfing and medical evacuation.

Frequently asked questions

Do all Mentawai surf resorts include boat trips?

Almost all do, because most breaks can only be reached by boat. The terms of those trips vary a lot.

What does “unlimited boat trips” mean?

Usually unlimited local trips within the normal range, subject to weather and safety, rather than unlimited fuel to any break.

Can a resort take me on an overnight boat trip?

Some can arrange it, often as a separate charter at extra cost. It isn’t a standard part of a land-based package.

How many surfers share a resort boat?

It varies by resort. Ask for the maximum per boat and whether groups are split by level.

Are boat trips included for non-surfers?

Sometimes. Some resorts include snorkelling or sightseeing trips; others charge extra.
