A Mentawai surf vacation usually means 7 to 14 nights at a surf resort, camp or charter boat off West Sumatra, reached via Padang. The main swell season is April to October. Planning comes down to four decisions: when to go, how long to stay, which format suits your group, and what all-in budget to set.

A mentawai surf vacation takes more planning than a trip to a surf town with an airport and a high street. The islands are reached by boat, most accommodation sells fixed packages, and the best weeks book out early. In return you get warm water, reef breaks spread over hundreds of kilometres of coast, and days that are mostly surfing, eating and sleeping. This page walks through the decisions in the order that saves the most trouble.

Mentawai Surf Holiday is an independent planning guide. We don’t own resorts or boats; we help you put the pieces together and connect with operators that fit.

Step 1: Pick your month

Your dates shape everything else. The table summarises typical conditions; actual swell varies from year to year and break to break.

Months Typical surf (face height) Wind and weather Good for
January–February Smaller, often 2–4 ft, occasional bigger pulses Light, variable or north-west; wetter Beginners, longboarders, budget travellers
March–April Building, roughly 3–8 ft Transitional; rain easing Intermediates, shoulder-season value
May More reliable, roughly 4–8 ft South-east trades becoming common Most levels with the right base
June–August Most consistent and largest, commonly 4–10 ft South-east trades, often offshore; drier Intermediate-plus and advanced surfers
September Very consistent, roughly 4–8 ft Trades weakening Advanced and intermediate surfers
October–November Easing, roughly 3–6 ft Turning variable or north-west; rain returns Shoulder-season value, fewer boats
December Smaller, around 2–4 ft Wet season, light or onshore winds Relaxed trips, learners

Water is around 27–30°C all year, so a rash vest or thin top is all most people use. For the reasoning behind these patterns, read our breakdown of Mentawai surf seasons.

Step 2: Decide how long to stay

Count two travel days on top of your surf days: one to reach the islands from Padang and one to get back. Most international travellers also spend a night in Padang at each end.

  • 7 nights: the practical minimum, roughly five or six full surf days. Fine if you’re coming from nearby, but one flat spell can take a big bite out of it.
  • 10 nights: a popular balance. You have a better chance of catching at least one solid swell.
  • 14 nights or more: common for long-haul travellers. Some operators offer long-stay discounts.

Many resorts and camps run check-ins on fixed days that match the ferry, so choose your length from the operator’s schedule before you book flights.

Step 3: Choose your format

Format Best for Watch out for
Surf camp Solo surfers, tight budgets, social trips Fan rooms, shared boats, fuel caps
Surf resort Couples, families, non-surfing partners Only waves in boat range of the base
Shared boat charter Surfers who want variety and to chase swell Small cabins, fixed group of strangers
Private charter Groups of friends who fill a boat Total cost; needs a full group

Our pages on the Mentawai surf camp option and on Mentawai surf tours compare these formats in more depth.

Step 4: Build an all-in budget

The package price is only part of the cost. A realistic Mentawai surf vacation budget includes:

  1. International flights to Padang, usually via Jakarta or Kuala Lumpur
  2. Indonesian visa: many nationalities use the visa on arrival or e-VOA, currently IDR 500,000 for up to 30 days
  3. One or two nights in Padang
  4. Transfer to the islands (ferry or speedboat), if not bundled
  5. The package itself: from 2025–2026 published rates, around US$130–250 per person per night for camps, US$200–350 for mid-range resorts and US$400+ for luxury
  6. The Mentawai surf levy: IDR 2,000,000 per surfer per 15 days
  7. Travel insurance that covers surfing and medical evacuation
  8. Drinks, tips, board repairs and board-bag fees on flights

Prices vary by operator and season, so use these as planning figures. Our pricing and cost guide breaks the numbers down further.

Step 5: Prepare well

Remote trips punish small oversights. Before you go:

  • Bring two or three boards, spare fins, leashes and a ding repair kit
  • Pack reef booties, reef-safe sunscreen, antiseptic and dressings for coral cuts
  • See a travel doctor about vaccinations and whether you need malaria prevention
  • Carry rupiah in cash; ATMs and card payments are limited in the islands
  • Expect slow or patchy internet

Sample Mentawai surf vacation itineraries

These outlines show how the days usually fall. Exact timings depend on ferry days, flights and the operator’s schedule.

10-night resort trip

  • Day 0: Land in Padang, overnight near the airport or harbour.
  • Day 1: Morning ferry or speedboat to the islands; afternoon session if the timing works.
  • Days 2–9: Two sessions a day, chosen by the guide for swell, tide and wind; rest or snorkel at midday.
  • Day 10: Last dawn surf if transfers allow, cross back to Padang, overnight.
  • Day 11: Fly home.

14-night split trip

Some surfers split two weeks between two bases, for example a week in the Playgrounds area followed by a week in south Sipora near Lance’s Right. It costs an extra transfer and needs check-in days that line up, but gives you a wider range of waves. Others do a week on a charter boat followed by a week on land to rest and surf a familiar wave.

Mixed group trip with non-surfers

For couples or families where only some people surf, a resort with a beach, shade and non-surfer rates usually works best. Plan a couple of shared days for snorkelling, fishing or a guided village visit, and keep the surfers on dawn sessions so the group can spend the afternoons together.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month for a Mentawai surf vacation?

For consistent, larger surf, June to August. For a balance of good waves and fewer crowds, April, May, September and October. Learners often prefer the smaller months.

How much does a Mentawai surf vacation cost?

It depends on format, length and season. Add flights, visa, Padang nights, the surf levy and insurance to the package price to get a true total.

Is a Mentawai surf vacation good for non-surfers?

A resort is the best option for mixed groups. Non-surfers can snorkel, fish, kayak, read and visit villages, but it’s a quiet place without nightlife.

Do I need to speak Indonesian?

No. Resort and camp staff usually speak enough English for daily needs. A few words of Bahasa Indonesia are appreciated in villages.

Is it safe?

The main risks are reef injuries, sun and distance from hospitals. Choose an operator with first aid, communications and an evacuation plan, and surf within your level.
