Sipora Island Surf Resort Guide: Katiet, HTs, Northwest Reefs and Getting There

On this page
A Sipora Island surf resort puts you on the Mentawai island closest to the Padang ferry, with Lance’s Right (HTs) and Lance’s Left near Katiet in the south and Telescopes, Iceland and Scarecrows to the northwest. The fast ferry to Tuapejat takes about 3.5–4 hours, making Sipora one of the easier Mentawai bases to reach.
Choosing a sipora island surf resort starts with one question: south or northwest? Sipora is long and narrow, and its best-known waves sit at opposite ends. Where you stay decides which breaks you can surf at dawn and which need a longer boat ride. This page explains how Sipora is laid out, the main resort zones, how to get there and how to match a base to your surfing level.
Mentawai Surf Holiday is an independent planning guide. We don’t own or run any resort on Sipora. We help travellers compare areas and connect with operators that suit them.
Sipora at a glance
Sipora sits between Siberut to the north and the Pagai islands to the south. Its main town, Tuapejat, is also the capital of the Mentawai Islands Regency and the arrival point for the public fast ferry from Padang. Most surf accommodation is not in Tuapejat itself. It’s spread along the coast, especially around the village of Katiet in the far south. Sipora also has a small airport at Rokot, but at the time of writing there is no dependable scheduled flight for ordinary tourist planning, so plan around the ferry or a resort speedboat.
Sipora Island surf resort zones
| Zone | Best-known waves | Wave character | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| South Sipora (Katiet) | Lance’s Right (HTs), Lance’s Left | Hollow, powerful reef breaks; Lance’s Right gets shallow at low tide | Strong intermediates to advanced |
| Northwest Sipora | Telescopes, Iceland, Scarecrows | Quality reef waves, several of them lefts | Intermediates to advanced, depending on size |
| Tuapejat area | Access by boat to central and northern breaks | Varies | Transit stops, short stays, non-surfers |
South Sipora and Katiet
Katiet is the village most surfers mean when they talk about staying on Sipora. It faces Lance’s Right, also called Hollow Trees or HTs, a fast right-hand reef break that has been one of the defining Mentawai waves since the 1990s. Lance’s Left sits nearby around the point. Accommodation here ranges from simple surf houses and homestays to private villas and resorts. Waking up in front of a wave like HTs is the big draw, but the reef is shallow, and it’s at its most demanding on lower tides and bigger swells. Read our Lance’s Right surf break guide before you decide.
Northwest Sipora
The northwest coast holds a run of high-quality reefs including Telescopes, Iceland and Scarecrows. A resort or camp with boat access to this coast gives you a different set of waves, several of them lefts, that suit other swell and wind combinations. Getting to a Sipora Island surf resort
- Fly into Padang (Minangkabau International Airport, PDG), ideally the day before your crossing.
- Take the public fast ferry from Padang to Tuapejat: about 3.5–4 hours, usually several sailings a week. Schedules change, so confirm before booking flights.
- Transfer onward by road or boat, depending on the operator. Resorts near Tuapejat can be minutes away; Katiet in the south takes longer.
Some resorts run their own speedboat from Padang instead, typically 3 to 4 hours depending on location and sea state. That gives more flexible days but usually costs more. Ask whether the transfer, ferry tickets and board-bag freight are in your package.
Prices and what’s included
Sipora covers almost every price point. From published 2025–2026 rates, simple surf houses and camps around Katiet typically start around US$120–220 per person per night, mid-range resorts around US$200–350, and private villas or luxury stays from around US$350–600 or more per person. Whole-villa rates change sharply with how many people share. Prices vary by operator and season, so treat these as planning ranges.
Most packages include accommodation, meals and boat access to nearby breaks. Many places in front of Lance’s Right rely on paddling out for the house wave and use boats for other spots. Ask how often boats run to Lance’s Left or the northwest reefs. The Mentawai surf levy, IDR 2,000,000 per surfer per 15 days, applies on Sipora as everywhere else in the regency.
How to choose your Sipora base
- Advanced surfers wanting a hollow right on the doorstep: Katiet, in front of HTs.
- Intermediates: a base with boat access to several breaks, so guides can pick something forgiving when HTs is too big or too shallow.
- Mixed groups and non-surfers: a resort with a usable beach, shade and comfortable rooms. Sipora’s ferry access also helps those who get seasick on long boat rides.
- Short trips: Sipora’s closeness to Padang means less travel time than the southern islands.

Best season for Sipora
Like the rest of the archipelago, Sipora is best from about April to October, with the most consistent swell from June to September. Lance’s Right needs a decent swell to start working well. In the smaller months from November to March, a base with access to several breaks gives you more options.
Life on Sipora beyond the surf
Sipora is more lived-in than some of the smaller surf islands. Tuapejat has government offices, small shops, a market and basic services, which can be handy for a SIM card, cash or supplies before heading south. Villages such as Katiet are small fishing and farming communities, and a surf resort there is part of village life rather than set apart from it. Dress modestly away from the beach and ask before photographing people.
On flat days, guests usually snorkel the inside reefs, go fishing with local boat crews, walk the coast or rest. Facilities are basic outside the resorts: medical care is limited, and serious injuries mean a transfer to Padang. Pack a good first-aid kit and make sure your insurance covers evacuation.

Frequently asked questions
Is Sipora a good island for a first Mentawai trip?
Yes, for confident surfers. It’s quick to reach from Padang and has a wide choice of accommodation. Newer surfers should choose a base with gentler options, not just a spot in front of HTs.
How do I get from Tuapejat to Katiet?
By road or boat, arranged by your accommodation. Timing depends on conditions, so let your operator plan it around the ferry.
Can I surf Lance’s Right as an intermediate?
On smaller days and higher tides, a strong intermediate may manage it. At low tide or in bigger swell it’s a serious, shallow wave best left to advanced surfers.
Are there flights to Sipora?
Sipora has Rokot airport, but there is no dependable scheduled tourist service right now. Most people use the fast ferry or a resort speedboat.
Can non-surfers enjoy Sipora?
Yes. Beaches, snorkelling, village visits and quiet days make it workable for partners, especially at resorts with good common areas.
