Mentawai Surf Retreat Guide: Coaching, Women’s and Surf-Yoga Retreats

On this page
A Mentawai surf retreat is a structured surf trip in the islands built around improvement or wellbeing, not just wave count. Formats include coaching camps with video analysis, women’s surf retreats and surf-and-yoga stays. Most run around 10 to 12 nights on fixed dates, based at a resort or on a boat, with coaching, meals and daily boat sessions included.
A mentawai surf retreat suits surfers who want to come home surfing better, or who want a trip with more structure and support than a standard resort week. Retreats run on fixed departures with a small group, a coach or host, and a set rhythm of surf sessions, feedback and recovery. This page explains the main retreat formats, what they typically include, who they suit and how to check that a retreat delivers what it promises.
Mentawai Surf Holiday is an independent planning guide. We don’t run retreats ourselves. We help travellers understand the options and connect with operators whose programme fits.
Types of Mentawai surf retreat
| Retreat type | Typical focus | Common inclusions | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coaching camp | Technique and wave selection | In-water coaching, filmed sessions, video review | Intermediates wanting to progress |
| Women’s surf retreat | Coaching in a women-only group | Coaching, photo and video, yoga or mobility | Women of mixed levels, solo travellers |
| Surf and yoga retreat | Balance of surfing and recovery | Daily yoga, surf guiding, healthy meals | Surfers who want rest built in |
| Boat-based retreat | Coaching while chasing swell | Coach aboard, video review, multiple regions | Confident intermediates and up |
The word “retreat” isn’t regulated. Some operators use it for a normal resort package with a yoga deck. If coaching, video analysis or yoga matters to you, check that it’s written into the itinerary for your specific departure.
What a surf retreat usually includes
- Accommodation and full board at a resort, camp or on a boat
- Two surf sessions a day when conditions allow, with boat access
- Coaching from a surf coach or experienced guide, in the water or from the boat
- Filmed sessions and video review, at coaching-focused retreats
- Yoga, stretching or mobility classes at wellness-focused retreats
- Transfers from Padang on the group’s arrival and departure day
Flights, insurance, alcohol and often the Mentawai surf levy (IDR 2,000,000 per surfer per 15 days) are usually extra. Ask whether coaching is one-to-one or group-based and how many surfers each coach works with.
How long are Mentawai surf retreats?
Most advertised retreats run around 10 to 12 days or nights, which gives time for feedback to sink in between sessions. Some run seven or eight nights and are lighter on coaching, while longer programmes of about two weeks also exist. Because retreats have fixed group dates, you’ll need to book flights to Padang around the group’s arrival and departure days.
Who a surf retreat suits
Intermediate surfers get the most from coaching retreats. Mentawai waves are well-shaped and consistent, which makes them good for working on bottom turns, tube positioning and wave selection. Video makes those habits visible in a way that’s hard to see from the lineup. If you’re unsure whether your level fits, our guide to Mentawai surf breaks for intermediate surfers is a good reference.
Solo travellers, especially women travelling alone, often prefer a retreat’s structure and ready-made group.
Beginners should be cautious. Many Mentawai waves break over shallow reef, so a beginner retreat needs a gentle wave nearby, soft boards and close in-water supervision. Ask what the programme does on big-swell days.
When to book a Mentawai surf retreat
Retreat dates often follow the main swell season from about April to October, when waves are most consistent. Coaching retreats for intermediates are sometimes scheduled in shoulder months like April, May or October, when swell is still good but crowds and size are lower. The smaller months from November to March can suit learners and surf-and-yoga formats. Popular retreats with small groups can fill months ahead.
How to judge a retreat before you book
- Coach-to-surfer ratio. Ask how many surfers each coach works with in the water.
- Coaching method. Is there in-water feedback, filmed sessions and scheduled video reviews? How often?
- Level grouping. Will you be grouped with surfers of a similar level, and how are waves chosen for mixed groups?
- Daily schedule. Ask for a sample day so you know how much is surfing, coaching and free time.
- Safety. Check first-aid training, communications and the evacuation plan.
- Total cost. Confirm transfers, levy and Padang nights so you can compare with a standard package.
A sample retreat day
A typical coaching day starts with a dawn session while the wind is light, filmed from the boat or the beach. Breakfast follows, then a short video review where the coach picks out two or three things to work on. After lunch and rest, a second session at a different break gives you a chance to try the changes. Evenings might bring a yoga or mobility class, dinner with the group and an early night.
Getting the most from a Mentawai surf retreat
A few habits help the coaching stick:
- Arrive surf-fit. Paddle or swim regularly for a few weeks beforehand. Two sessions a day for ten days is a lot of paddling, and tired arms limit what coaching can do.
- Set one or two goals. Tell the coach on day one what you want to improve, whether that’s backhand turns, getting barrelled or paddling into steeper waves.
- Watch your footage properly. Take notes in the review sessions and pick one change per session rather than trying to fix everything at once.
- Look after your skin. Treat reef cuts straight away with antiseptic and keep them dry when you can; an infected cut can end a retreat early.
- Rest when the group rests. Recovery days and yoga are part of the plan, not time off it.
Retreat or standard package?
A standard resort or camp package gives you more freedom: surf when you like, rest when you like, and pay less. A retreat costs more per night but gives you structure and feedback. If you’re not sure, a resort that offers optional coaching can sit in between. Our pages on the Mentawai surf camp and Mentawai surf tours options explain the standard formats.

Frequently asked questions
Are Mentawai surf retreats suitable for beginners?
Only some. Choose one with a gentle wave nearby, soft boards and close supervision. Most coaching retreats are aimed at intermediates.
Do I need to bring a group?
No. Retreats are built for individuals and couples who join a small group on fixed dates.
Is video analysis always included?
Not always. It is common on coaching and women’s retreats but not on every surf-and-yoga stay. Check your departure’s itinerary.
Can non-surfers join a surf retreat?
Some yoga-focused retreats welcome non-surfing partners. Coaching retreats are usually for surfers only.
What boards should I bring?
Bring the boards you surf best, usually two or three, and ask the coach whether a slightly bigger board would help with the retreat’s focus.
