Mentawai Surf Resort Prices: 2025-2026 Rates, Extras and Budgets

On this page
Published 2025–2026 Mentawai surf resort prices run from about US$130–250 per person per night at surf camps, US$200–350 at mid-range resorts and US$400–650+ at luxury resorts, usually including meals, daily surf boats and guiding. A 10-night stay therefore costs roughly US$1,300 to over US$6,500 per person before flights, the surf levy and any transfer not bundled.
Mentawai surf resort prices can look confusing at first. Some resorts quote per person per night, others per package; some include the Padang transfer, others don’t; some add tax and service on top. This guide sets out the typical price bands, explains what drives the differences, lists the extras that change the real cost, and shows how to compare two quotes fairly. All figures are planning ranges based on published 2025–2026 rates. Prices vary by operator, season, room occupancy and trip length, so always confirm a written quote.
Mentawai Surf Holiday is an independent planning guide. We don’t own or sell any resort; we help travellers compare options and connect with independent operators.
Typical price bands
| Tier | Per person per night (indicative) | 10-night equivalent | Usually included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surf camp or homestay | About US$130–250 | About US$1,300–2,500 | Simple room, three meals, shared surf boats, local guiding |
| Mid-range resort | About US$200–350 | About US$2,000–3,500 | Ensuite room or bungalow, full board, scheduled boats, transfers on set days at many |
| Luxury resort or villa | About US$400–650+ | About US$4,000–6,500+ | Villa, refined meals, smaller boat groups, transfers, extras such as yoga or coaching at some |
The bands overlap because labels are loose. Some well-equipped camps price close to mid-range resorts, and some premium coaching weeks cost more than a standard luxury stay. Read our Mentawai surf camp guide for the budget end and the luxury Mentawai surf resort guide for the top end.
What drives resort prices
Season
June to August is peak season, with the most consistent swell and the highest demand. Resorts charge their full rate and fill early. The shoulder months of April, May, September and October are often a little cheaper, and some resorts discount the wetter months from November to March.
Room and occupancy
Sharing a room or bungalow is usually cheaper per person than taking it alone, and single supplements are common. Air-conditioned and ensuite rooms cost more than fan-cooled or shared-bathroom rooms at the same property.
Boats and guiding
The surf boat is one of a resort’s biggest costs. Fewer guests per boat, more boat runs per day and generous fuel allowances all push the price up, and they are often worth paying for.
Location
Resorts in front of a famous wave, or in remote areas that need longer transfers, can price higher than those in busier zones.
Trip length
Many resorts set their headline rate on a 10-night package and offer long-stay discounts for 14 nights or more. Very short stays, where allowed, can cost more per night.
Extras that change the real cost
| Extra | Typical amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mentawai surf levy | IDR 2,000,000 per surfer per 15 days | About US$120–130; included at some resorts, paid separately at others |
| Padang to resort transfer | A few hundred US dollars return when not bundled | Check whether board-bag freight and port fees are covered |
| Padang hotel nights | One or two nights | Sometimes included in higher-end packages |
| Government tax and service | Some resorts add 11% tax plus 10% service | Ask whether a quote is “net” or “plus plus” |
| Drinks, laundry, board repairs | Varies | Usually settled on a bar tab before you leave |
| Long boat missions | Varies | Extra fuel for distant breaks at some resorts |
Flights to Padang and travel insurance with surfing and evacuation cover sit outside every resort price, so budget for them separately.
Non-surfer rates
Non-surfer pricing isn’t standardised. Some resorts publish a lower rate because non-surfers don’t use the surf boats; others charge the same or close to it because rooms, meals and transfers dominate the cost. Non-surfers don’t pay the surf levy. Always ask for a written non-surfer price.
How to compare two resort quotes
- Convert both quotes to the same number of nights and the same room type.
- Check whether each is per person or per room, and whether tax and service are included.
- Add the transfer, levy and Padang hotel nights where they are missing.
- Compare boat terms: guests per boat, runs per day, fuel limits.
- Read the deposit, balance and cancellation terms.
The cheaper nightly rate isn’t always the cheaper trip. A resort that bundles the transfer, levy and a smaller boat group can cost less in practice than one with a lower headline price. Our main Mentawai surf resort guide explains how to match a resort to your level and region, and our page on Mentawai surf resort packages explains how packages are put together.
Sample resort budgets for 10 nights
To turn the bands into a trip budget, add the usual extras to the package price. At a surf camp, a 10-night package of around US$1,300–2,500, plus the levy, a return transfer if not bundled and one or two Padang nights, typically lands somewhere around US$1,800–3,200 per person before flights and insurance. At a mid-range resort, the same arithmetic usually gives around US$2,500–4,200. At a luxury resort, where transfers and Padang nights are more often included, the total is often close to the package price plus the levy, tax and drinks. These are illustrations, not quotes; your real figure depends on the exact resort, room and dates.
Ways to keep resort costs down
- Travel in the shoulder months rather than June to August.
- Share a room and avoid single supplements.
- Book early; some resorts offer early-booking discounts.
- Stay longer if the resort has a long-stay rate.
- Choose a camp with a strong boat set-up over a resort with facilities you won’t use.
