How to get to Mentawai surf resorts: fly into Padang’s Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), transfer by road to Muaro Padang port, take the Mentawai Fast ferry to Tua Pejat on Sipora or Maileppet on Siberut (roughly 3.5–4.5 hours direct), then a resort speedboat to your accommodation. Schedules change, so confirm sailings and keep buffer days.

Working out how to get to Mentawai surf resorts is the part of trip planning that catches most first-timers off guard. The islands lie off the west coast of Sumatra, roughly 150 km offshore, and there is no single bridge, no regular big-airline service and no quick road connection. Every trip involves at least one flight, a sea crossing and usually a speedboat. This guide walks through the standard route, the alternatives, realistic timings and the mistakes that cost people surf days.

How to get to Mentawai surf resorts: the standard route

Step 1: Fly to Padang (PDG)

Padang’s Minangkabau International Airport is the gateway for almost every Mentawai trip. Most international travellers connect through Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur or another regional hub; there are generally no regular non-stop flights from Bali to Padang, so plan on at least one connection from there too. Surfboard fees and weight limits vary by airline, so check them before booking, especially for multi-board bags.

Step 2: Transfer to Muaro Padang port

The public fast ferry leaves from Muaro Padang, a road transfer of roughly one to two hours from the airport depending on traffic. Most resorts and camps arrange this transfer for guests, often with a night in a Padang hotel before an early-morning sailing.

Step 3: The Mentawai Fast ferry

Mentawai Fast is the standard public connection to the islands. Published schedules in 2025–26 have commonly shown morning departures around 07:00, with sailings to Tua Pejat on Sipora on some days of the week and sailings to Maileppet on Siberut on others. A direct crossing typically takes about 3.5–4.5 hours. Some Siberut services stop at Sikabaluan along the way and can take around seven hours.

Timetables do change, and cancellations or delays happen with weather, vessel maintenance and operator decisions. Surfboards may carry an extra charge. Always confirm the current schedule with your resort or the operator a few days before travel.

Step 4: Resort speedboat transfer

From Tua Pejat or Maileppet, resorts and camps usually collect guests by private speedboat. Some transfers take under an hour; others take substantially longer, depending on location and sea state. Remote resorts in the south of the chain may use a different arrival point or a longer charter-style transfer.

Route options at a glance

Destination Typical route Things to know
Sipora resorts PDG → Muaro Padang → fast ferry to Tua Pejat → speedboat or road transfer Most common route; Tua Pejat is the regency’s main town
Siberut and Playgrounds resorts PDG → Muaro Padang → fast ferry to Maileppet or Tua Pejat → speedboat Some resorts use Tua Pejat even if they are nearer Siberut; follow your resort’s instructions
Southern breaks (Pagai) PDG → ferry to an island port → longer resort boat transfer Transfers are longer and more weather-dependent
Charter boats PDG → Padang harbour → board the boat directly Some boats depart Padang overnight; crossing time varies
Small aircraft to Rokot (Sipora) PDG → Rokot airport, then road or boat Service has been irregular; confirm before relying on it

Is there a flight to the Mentawai Islands?

Sipora has a small airport at Rokot. Small-aircraft services between Padang and Rokot have been reported at around 40–45 minutes, but scheduled availability has been irregular, and some routes have been suspended at times. Treat it as a possible option to confirm directly, not a dependable default. There is no dependable scheduled passenger flight to Siberut; access is by sea.

Realistic travel time

From an international arrival to your resort deck, plan for one to two travel days. A common pattern looks like this: fly into Padang, sleep near the port, take the early ferry, and arrive at the resort by early-to-mid afternoon. If your international flight lands late or the ferry is not running that day, add a night in Padang.

On the way home, give yourself the same buffer. A ferry that is delayed by a day can easily wipe out an international connection. Many experienced travellers book their homeward flight at least a day after their last scheduled crossing.

The Mentawai surf levy

Visitors who surf in the Mentawai Islands Regency are required to pay a regional surf levy, known locally as a retribusi. The amount and collection method have changed over the years, and we have not found a reliably current 2026 figure, so we will not quote one here. Ask your resort or camp whether the levy is included in your package and how it is collected.

Tips that save surf days

  • Let your operator book the transfers. Resorts know the current ferry schedule, and coordinated transfers are easier to rebook if something changes.
  • Build in buffer days. One spare day at each end protects your flights and your surf time.
  • Pack smart for boats. Use a durable board bag, protect fins and keep valuables in a dry bag. Our Mentawai surf packing list covers what to bring.
  • Prepare for seasickness. Open-water crossings can be rough. If you are prone to seasickness, bring remedies and take them before you board.
  • Carry some cash. Card facilities are limited in the islands. Small amounts of Indonesian rupiah help for port fees, snacks and tips.
  • Bring the right quiver. Fewer, well-chosen boards are easier on boats and ferries. See our guide to what surfboards to take to the Mentawais.

Choosing a resort with easy logistics

Transfer time is an underrated factor when you compare resorts. A resort close to Tua Pejat means a shorter final leg and fewer variables. Our overview of Sipora Island surf resort options explains why many first-time visitors base themselves on Sipora. Coming from Australia?
