No single Mentawai island is best for every surfer. The Playgrounds islands off southern Siberut have the most breaks close together and suit the widest range of levels. Sipora offers the easiest access and the famous HTs. North Pagai is home to Macaronis and suits confident surfers who want a quieter, more remote base.
The Mentawai chain has four main islands and dozens of smaller ones, and each area surfs differently. Choosing the right one is really about matching three things: your level, how much variety you want, and how much travel you’ll accept. This guide compares the main islands for surfing, explains who each one suits, and gives a simple way to decide.
Mentawai Surf Holiday is an independent planning guide. We don’t own resorts or boats; we help travellers plan and connect with independent operators.
The main islands compared
| Island or area | Headline waves | Variety | Typical level | Access from Padang |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Siberut area (Playgrounds islands) | Rifles, Bank Vaults, Kandui Left, E-Bay | Highest: many reefs within a short boat ride | Intermediate to expert | Ferry to Tuapejat or Muara Siberut, then resort boat |
| Sipora (Tuapejat and northwest) | Telescopes and nearby lefts | Good, with fewer boats than Playgrounds | Confident intermediate to advanced | Fast ferry to Tuapejat, about 3.5–5 hours |
| Sipora (Katiet, south) | Lance’s Right (HTs), Lance’s Left | Focused on two famous waves | Advanced, intermediate on small days | Ferry to Tuapejat, then road or boat |
| North Pagai (Silabu) | Macaronis, Silabu Left | Focused on one world-class left and nearby reefs | Confident intermediate to advanced | Ferry to Sikakap, then about 1–2 hours by speedboat |
| South Pagai and remote south | Lesser-known southern reefs | Uncrowded but hard to reach | Advanced to expert | Mostly by charter boat |
Siberut area: the most choice
Most surf resorts described as being on Siberut sit on small islands off its southern coast, such as Karangmajat, Masokut and Nyang Nyang. Together they form Playgrounds, the densest cluster of breaks in the Mentawais. The big advantage is choice: whatever the swell size or wind, a guide can usually find a wave. There are heavy reefs for experts and softer options for intermediates, which makes it a strong base for a first trip or a mixed-ability group.
The downside is traffic. Playgrounds lies on the usual charter routes, so famous reefs can be busy in peak season. See our Siberut surf resort guide for where the resorts are and how to reach them.
Sipora: the easiest access
Sipora is the middle island and home to Tuapejat, the main administrative town and ferry port. That makes it the most straightforward island to reach, with the fast ferry from Padang arriving there several times a week. It has two distinct surf zones. In the northwest, Telescopes is a long, quality left that holds a wide range of sizes, with other reefs nearby. In the south, Katiet sits in front of Lance’s Right, also called HTs, a hollow right that is one of the most famous waves in Indonesia, with Lance’s Left close by.
Sipora suits strong intermediate and advanced surfers who want good waves without a long transfer, and it has the widest range of land-based accommodation. Our Sipora Island surf resort guide covers where to stay.
North Pagai: Macaronis and a quieter feel
North Pagai is further south and less developed. Its headline wave is Macaronis, a long, mechanical left off Silabu that ranks among the best-known waves in the world. Nearby reefs such as Silabu Left add options. Getting there takes longer, usually via the ferry to Sikakap and a speedboat transfer, and there are fewer places to stay. In return, the area feels more remote than Playgrounds. It suits confident intermediates on smaller days and advanced surfers at size, especially goofy-footers who want to spend their trip on a long left. Our Macaronis Mentawai resort guide explains the options there.
South Pagai and the remote south
The southern end of the chain has reefs that see far fewer surfers. Access, accommodation, communications and medical support are limited, so these areas are best treated as expedition territory and surfed from an experienced charter boat rather than a land base. They suit advanced surfers with flexible plans.
Which island is best for you?
| If you are… | Consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| On your first Mentawai trip | Siberut area or Sipora | Most choice or easiest access |
| A progressing intermediate | Siberut area | More softer reefs within range |
| An advanced surfer who loves rights | South Sipora | Waking up in front of HTs |
| An advanced surfer who loves lefts | North Pagai or northwest Sipora | Macaronis and Telescopes |
| Travelling with non-surfers | Sipora or a comfortable Siberut-area resort | Easier access and more resort choice |
| Chasing empty line-ups | Charter to the south, or shoulder months anywhere | Remoteness and timing beat location alone |
Season makes a difference
All the islands are at their best in the main season from about April to October, when south to south-west groundswells and south-east trade winds are most reliable. In the quieter, wetter months from November to March, the choice of island matters more: a base with many breaks in range, such as Playgrounds, gives you more chances on smaller or windier days than a base built around one wave.
Can you surf more than one island?
Yes, in two ways. A charter boat can link Playgrounds, Sipora and sometimes the Pagai islands in one trip, following the swell. Or you can split a land-based stay between two resorts, which takes an extra transfer day and more planning. Most first-timers keep it simple and choose one base for ten nights.
